Biography/history Marie Taylor is a traditional Elder, Custodian and descendent of Whadjuk Juet Balardong country Nyungars from the South Western Australia’s Bibbulmun peoples. She has a long career in both government and non-government agencies. She is a community leader, storyteller, author and Elder in Residence at Holyoake as well as SoPYC. Marie is the Chairperson of Yelakitj Moort Nyungar Association which ensures traditions, culture, language and stories of the Nyungar families are maintained and taught in schools and community.
Summary During the opening ceremony at the 75th Anniversary of the South of Perth Yacht Club Marie Taylor delivered the Welcome to Country including a Smoking Ceremony on the eastern side of the yacht club to cleanse the site of ‘warra’ / bad spirits and welcome the good spirits to the place and the sailing community. She spoke extensively in language during the ceremony. Marie Taylor’s role will be to give cultural advice to the Club about the rivers, and assist with the adjacent Aboriginal Heritage listed site, Goolugatup Heathcote. This is the first time an Elder in Residence has been appointed at a yacht club in Australia.
