Biography/history |
The Coffee Pot was a unique place in Perth in the 1950s. The small coffee shop was open until 2am on week nights and until 3am on weekends. It was owned by Dutch Indonesian migrants Prada and Rob van der Nagel who provided good coffee (seen as unusual in the 50s), home made food, jazz music and stimulating conversation. They also supported local artists such as Guy Grey Smith and Brian MacKay. The Coffee Pot was frequented by nurses from the Royal Perth Hospital and became a 'student mecca' for trainee teachers from Graylands Teachers College. It also offered a refuge from the conservative social policies of the time and was a place where different cultures could mix. In a time when homosexuality was illegal, the Coffee Pot also became a haven for the gay community. It was also a place where musicians and theatre actors went after their shows and many people would also visit the Coffee Pot after attending dances at the Embassy or Canterbury Court Ballrooms. Prada and Rob managed the Coffee Pot until 1979, when they had to relocate to Subiaco due to the road widening. They retired in 1982. |
