Biography/history Simmonds placed great value on the experimental approach having began his research career at Oxford on a Nuffield Fellowship in 1947. In addition to carrying out experiments in respiration, he was appointed departmental demonstrator by Professor E.G.T. Liddell, enabling him to play an active role in teaching in the practical classes of the Human Physiology Section of the Final Honours School of Physiology. From 1950-57, Simmonds returned to Australia and took up position of Senior Research Assistant in the Kanematsu Institute and from 1957 to 1983 he was appointed the foundation professor of Physiology at the University of Western Australia.
Summary Prof Wilfred Simmonds talks about his secondary at Ipswich Grammar School and tertiary education in Brisbane, his scholarship and entering University of Queensland at 16, his lecturers, such as Prof. Douglas H. K. Lee, and his academic career at the University of Western Australia between 1957 and 1983 where he played key roles as the foundation professor of physiology in the newly established medical school.
