Summary |
Donald Aitken discusses his early years and family life in Midland, attending Guildford Grammar School and studying engineering at the University of Western Australia. His interest in soils and soil mechanics and roads influenced his work as an engineer with the Department of Main Roads where at the age of forty he became Commisioner of Main Roads (1965-1987). He discusses a number of issues relating to Main Road department including:- Commissioner Digby Leach; changes to methods of road construction; installation of traffic lights in Perth; conservation and replanting of road verges; Stephenson Plan. |
