Summary
Sadie Miriam Canning (nee Corner) talks about her life and many achievements. She was born in Laverton and was educated at Mt Margaret Mission. She went to Melbourne at the age of 18 to do her nursing training and after nursing for some years in Perth, she took a nursing post at Leonora District Hospital, believing she could be of more assistance to her own Aboriginal people by returning to the Goldfields where she grew up. Sadie was later appointed matron of the hospital and she set about changing long-standing hospital policies and breaking down the barriers of racial discrimination. She ran the hospital for more than 30 years and was awarded an MBE and an OBE. She married Graham Canning in 1966.
