Summary A demonstration for the media of the sniffer dog unit at the Perth Airport sees a dog tackling a man on the tarmac, then inside the terminal identifying a suspect item in a piece of luggage. The aircraft depicted in photos 347786PD, 347788PD, 347789PD, 347790PD and 347791PD is VR-HFT Convair 880-22M-3 of Cathay Pacific Airways: The Convair 880 jet airliner was produced by Convair to compete with the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. It was smaller, carried less passengers, but was faster. However, it was not a commercial success - only 65 Convair 880s were built during the three-year production run (1959 to 1962), and Convair considered the project a failure. Cathay Pacific operated a total of nine Convair 880s, but only two were ordered directly from Convair, with the rest being purchased second hand from other airlines. They served the airline from 1961 to 1975. VR-HFT Convair 880-22M-3 of Cathay Pacific Airways (construction number 22-00-43M): First flown as N8485H with Convair in 1961. Swissair had ordered the Convair 990 (a longer, modified version of the Convair 880), but delivery of the CV990 was delayed when performance was found to be below specifications. Swissair therefore leased two Convair 880s to operate their Far East routes until the CV990s could be delivered. This aircraft is one of the two leased CV880s, delivered to Swissair as HB-ICL on 11 August 1961. Stored at Zurich, Switzerland from 10 September 1961 until 19 May 1962 when it went back to General Dynamics (Convair) in the USA, registered as N94284. Stored at Mojave, California until sold to Cathay Pacific Airways on 15 October 1964 and registered VR-HFT. It arrived in Hong Kong after its delivery flight on 14 November 1964. Served Cathay Pacific for 10 years, then withdrawn from use. On 10 April 1974, it was sold to Compania Inter-Americana Import/Export Corporation and registered as N48058 on 28 April 1975, and sold to International Air Leases the same day. Sold to Air Travel Ltd in August 1975, and registered to them on 18 November 1975. Leased from 28 December 1975 to Travel-A-Go-Go (renamed Jetaway in October 1976). Sold to Jet Charters Inc on 27 Feb 1978 and was seen at Cincinnatti in a faded Cathay Pacific colour scheme with 'Jetaway' titles. Sold to Onyx Aviation Inc on 5 December 1978. The aircraft was withdrawn from use at Cincinnati, and purchased by International Airline Support Corporation in January 1986. It was broken up for spare parts and scrap metal during May 1986. (Info supplied by David Eyre – August 2009).
The aircraft depicted in photos 347787PD is VH-DRV Beech Queen Air A65-8200 Commuter of Civil Flying Services (WA) Pty Ltd VH-DRV Beech Queen Air A65-8200 Commuter of Civil Flying Services (WA) Pty Ltd (construction number LC-277) First registered in the USA as N7056N. Registered VH-DRV to Hawker de Havilland Australia Pty Ltd on 7 February 1968. Sold to Ashburton Air Charter, South Perth, in February 1968, and registered to them on 10 Feb 1968. Sold to Hicks Aviation Company Pty Ltd, Perth, and registered to them 14 June 1968. On 2/5/70, during a take-off at Dijicon Camp, WA, the pilot lifted-off too early on the sub-standard airstrip, and the aircraft struck a rock. Sold to Australian Transport Airservices Pty Ltd, Cloverdale, WA, and registered to them 4 November 1971. Sold to Civil Flying Services (W.A.) Pty Ltd and registered to them 9 February 1972. On 7 February 1977, on runway 03 at Esperance, a bird hit the aircraft's HF aerial. Struck-Off-Register 16/1/78 as it had been sold to Solomon Island Airways (Solair), and registered as VP-PBE.
