Biography/history |
Following World War I, Australian Commonwealth Line ordered five identical passenger-cargo liners for the Australian emigrant service. The new steamers, completed 1921-1922, were each named after a bay in five Australian states. They became known as the 'Bay ships'. The ships operated monthly departures between the ports of London, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and accommodated 12 first class, and around 700 third class passengers. In 1936 SS Esperance Bay was purchased and re-named Arawa. |
