Summary |
About his life and work as an agricultural advisor 1921-1965. Born in Northam and after schooling was appointed the first Department of Agriculture Cadet in 1921. Studied at University of WA between 1922 and 1927; was involved in an outbreak of Rinderpest in 1923; and was President of the Guild of Undergraduates in 1926. 1927 appointed Merredin Agricultural Adviser. A period at Salmon Gums from 1928 led to his working in preliminary soil and plant surveys for the proposed 3,500 farms scheme. Effects of Depression on farmers, Agricultural Bank's Fallowing Loan Scheme in the Esperance area, work of the Esperance Farm Board. Effects of rabbits on farming. With his appointment to Geraldton as Agricultural Adviser in 1933, took on supervision of the Chapman Valley Research Station and inspection of wheat and flour for export. 1939 appointed to Moora and was involved in copper deficiency experiements and pasture improvement. He was associated with the first Pasture Improvement Group formed in Miling in 1939 and with the start of other groups in later years. With Dr A J Millington, Mr Throssell discovered a new strain of clover in 1950, later named Geraldton clover. |
