Summary Children's literature and theatre. Gives an account of his school days at Subiaco Primary School and later at Modern School having gained a scholarship. Entered University of Western Australia in 1924 and obtained a BA in 1927, '28 & '29. Was a monitor in the Education Department for 18 months and then obtained a cadetship with West Australian Newspapers. Described the graduation ceremony in Government House ballroom as well as the course for a Diploma of Journalism which commenced at the University at this time. In 1929 he won a scholarship to study in London. Was chief drama critic on the Era in London from 1930-1935. 1931 married Coralie Clarke, a fellow student and journalist and later co-author. While in London he contributed a column to The West Australian called 'London Nights' and his nom-de-plume was Kangaroo. Returned to Australia in 1936 and settled in Sydney but his main work was as Federal Drama Editor for the ABC; in later years was Deputy Director of Drama, a position he held until 1966. 1975 was Writer in Residence at Mt Lawley College of Advanced Education.
