Summary |
Miss Parker was born in Hangkow, China, in 1907. When she was thirteen years old Evelyn Parker, with her mother and three brothers, moved to England. In 1921 the family migrated to Australia - first to Sydney and then to Perth. After leaving school Miss Parker accepted a position of school monitor at Brookton, and in 1928/29 completed a one year teacher training course at Claremont Teachers' Training College. Between 1930 and 1951 Miss Parker taught at various schools, including: Stratherne, Jacketup, Marradong, Byford, Carlisle and Cottesloe. In 1951 Miss Parker accepted an appointment at Subiaco Primary School where she became first mistress. She taught at Subiaco until she retired in 1967. Between 1953 and 1975 Evelyn Parker served as a councillor for the Central Ward on the Subiaco Council. When elected Mayor in 1975 she was the first woman in Western Australia to hold this title. Miss Parker retired from local government, while Mayor, in 1977. In 1975 Evelyn Parker was named WA Citizen of the Year, and in 1977 received an OBE for Civil Service. In 1986 she was made a Freeman of the City of Subiaco, and in 1990 the Evelyn H. Parker Library was named in her honour. The interview concentrated on Evelyn Parker's career in local government. She was able to provide a detailed picture of her work on the Subiaco Council, including the establishment of facilities for the young and the old in the community. She also described her duties and experience as Mayor. |
