Biography/history |
Dr Aubrey Nicholls, son of the late Professor George E. Nicholls (2nd Professor of Zoology, University of Western Australia, 1921-1948) who is well known for his taxonomic work on Phreatoidcidea. In 1928, Aubrey graduated with a B. Sc. (Hons) and joined the Great Barrier Reef Expedition and lived for a year on Low Island, working on corals. From 1929-1932, he was studying at the University College, London for his Ph.D and also working at Plymouth Marine Laboratory on marine littoral isopod. He returned to Australia in 1939 and consolidated his work as a copepod taxonomist and served as President of the Royal Society of Western Australia during the war years. In 1947, Aubrey beagan his 22-year association with the CSIRO Division of Fisheries and Oceanography. He completed his study on the Tasmanian trout fishery during his 12-year stay in Tasmania. He was also the inaugural President of Australian Society for Limnology in 1962. |
