Biography/history |
The Benedictine Community was founded at New Norcia as a monastery, undertaking a mission to the Aboriginal people of the area. In 1867 it was made an Abbey Nullius and remained so until 1982. In the early 1900s schools for European/Australian children were opened. The monks lived their monastic life while managing a farm and the mission, and doing pastoral work in the Parishes of the Abbey Nullius and in the schools. |
