Biography/history Jiro Muramats, pearler and storekeeper, was born in Kobe, Japan in 1878, the second son of Sakutarō Muramatsu and his wife Sada of Fujieda, Shizuoka prefecture. Sakutaro Muramat had set up business in Cossack, Western Australia in 1891 as an importer and storekeeper for the Japanese community. On Sakutaro’s death in 1898, Jiro, and his older brother Tsunetaro reconstituted the family firm as J. & T. Muramats. It operated in Australia until World War Two, with Jiro managing operations, while his brother managed operations in Japan until his death in 1925. Jiro died in 1943.
