The Western Australia Department for Community Welfare was established on 1st July 1972 (at the same time as the Aboriginal Affairs Planning Authority was established). The Department for Community Welfare assumed responsibility for the welfare functions (and the State Housing Commission assumed responsibility for the urban housing programme for Aboriginal peoples) previously carried out by the discontinued Western Australia Department of Native Welfare. From 1983 the Department was renamed as: Western Australia Department for Community Welfare.
