| Biography/history |
Martyn Webb was born in London on 28 September 1929. He arrived in Western Australia during the iron ore boom with his wife Audrey Webb and sons Paul and John to take up the position of Foundation Professor of Geography at University of Western Australia in 1964, via the ship, Oriana. As advisor to the Country Shire Councils Association, Professor Webb was one of the initiators of the Western Australian Local Government Association. He also helped found the WA Conservation Council and was its Trustee for many years. As a member of the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry he advised on the planning and development of Perth, as a State capital. In December 2014, the City of Nedlands bestowed Professor Webb as their third Freeman of the City. Prof. Webb's work as a geographer saw him being awarded honorary memberships of the Royal Institute of Architects; the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science; the Australian Institute for Urban Studies and the Planning Institute of Australia. |
| Summary |
Emeritus Martyn Webb offers an insight to his early background in England, how he lived through the Great Depression and the calibre of his teachers during the war years and entering Oxford University, was the happiest moment and the first time he met Australians. Due to his father's good impression of fighting alongside Australians in Sept 1914 at the battle of the Narrows. He talks during the war years, with the recruitment of army officers for Oxford and Cambridge Universities, he seized the opportunity and entered Oxford University in 1943 as a cadet. He also recounts his arrival in Perth and his years at University of Western Australia and his involvement in the urban planning of Perth. |
