Biography/history |
Henry Charles Prinsep (1844-1922) was born in Calcutta where his family were involved in the East India Company. Came to Australia in 1865 with his brother Charles to view family estates. Married Charlotte Josephine Bussell in 1868 and settled in Western Australia. Abandoned Prinsep Estate near Bunbury in 1874 due to financial difficulties. Draughtsman and later Departmental Head (1894) in Lands and Survey Office in Perth. During their time in Perth, the Prinseps were prominent in the social and artistic life of the city. They had three daughters Carlotta, Emily and Virginia; Carlotta married her cousin Peter Brockman in 1900 |

Papers of Henry Charles Prinsep, Charles John Prinsep, Charlotte Josephine Prinsep (nee Bussell) (including 1831 diary possibly of Frances Louisa Bussell), Carlotta Louisa Brockman (nee Prinsep), consisting of personal papers and records kept on Prinsep estates at Dardanup and Belvidue near Australind, at Holland House (Busselton) and in Perth; include sketches, watercolours, photographs, and plans. "De Principe" (Acc. 3150A), a family history of the Prinseps compiled by James Charles Prinsep. Also family papers consisting mainly of dated correspondence (1834-1958), but with some records re land and agreements, cheque butts and diary notes; another sequence (1850-1930) including outward letterbook (1867-1873), bank books, and log of voyage from England to China in barque "Mary Bannatyne" by unnamed passenger. |
