Biography/history Sir John Forrest, 1st Baron Forrest of Bunbury, surveyor, explorer and politician, was born in 1847, the fourth child of William Forrest and his wife Margaret Guthrie (née Hill) and died in 1918. Alexander Forrest, explorer, politician and investor, was born in 1849 and died in 1901. He was John Forrest's younger brother. John Forrest worked in most parts of the south-west of Western Australia, and in March 1869 he was offered appointment as second-in-command and navigator to Dr Ferdinand Mueller on an expedition from Perth in search of clues to the fate of Leichhardt. When Mueller could not manage the trip, Forrest was chosen to succeed him. From 15 April until 6 August he successfully led six men and sixteen horses over 3200 km, much of it in uncharted wilderness around Lake Moore and Lake Barlee, and inland almost as far as the later site of Laverton. He found no trace of Leichhardt, but had, however, systematically surveyed his route using the most up-to-date methods of stellar observation, and he had brought back specimens for botanists and geologists. In 1874 Forrest led another expedition from Geraldton with his brother Alexander second in command. They travelled west from Geraldton, east through the arid western centre to the north-south telegraph line in South Australia.
