Title devised by cataloguer. Caption in album not in the photographer's hand: Decorations erected for the visit of Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Alfred) Adelaide Terrace, 1869 (sic) |
As this photograph was put into Fanny's album in 1868 it cannot have been taken in 1869. It was probably taken in 1868 of decorations put up in 1867 when the Prince was expected to visit Perth and left up for his actual visit in January 1869. |
From an album A.H. Stone gave to his daughter Fanny Hampton on 30th October 1868 as a parting gift before she and her new husband left W.A. on 14 November 1868. |

Decorations to welcome Prince Alfred (second son on Queen Victoria) who it was thought would visit Perth in 1867. In the event the Prince did not come to Perth in that year. The Perth Gazette reports its readers' disappointment that their city, its decorations in place, had not been included in the tour. The Prince did finally visit, too late for his photograph to be put into Fanny's album (Court & Camera : the life & times of A. H. Stone by J. O'Brien & P. Statham-Drew (2012), p.220-221.) |
