Summary	The new highway was officially opened by the Premier Sir Charles Court on 3rd December 1974 with the Commissioner for Main Roads D.H. Aitken. The roadside ceremony was held at the tourist information bay near the South Hedland Turnoff. The final section included building the Sherlock River Bridge.
