Biography/history Prof. Bailey was born in Devizes in Wiltshire, England on 16 December 1899 and migrated to Nangeenan (now Merredin), Western Australia at the age of ten in 1910 with his parents and two brothers. He entered the University of Western Australia to study Classics with English and Logic and Ancient Philosophy in 1922. Being the only student of the Prof. of Classics, George Woods, he learnt linguistics from him and after completing his Masters degree in 1926, he won a scholarship to Oxford where he studied Sanskrit, Avestan, and Indo-European comparative philology. He soon became interested in the history and development of the Iranian branch of Indo-European, Georgian and Persian. He was appointed as Parsee Community Lecturer in London School of Oriental Studies in 1929 after graduating with first class honours. In 1936, Bailey became Professor of Sanskrit and a Fellow at Queen's College, Cambridge. He has been credited with a knowledge of more than fifty languages, the prime monument to his scholarship will be his work on Middle Persian (Pahlavi) scripts and Khotanese.
