Biography/history The history of unions in the Western Australian public transport sector began in 1901 with the inauguration of the Perth Electric Tramways Industrial Union of Workers. The following year the Locomotive Engine Drivers’, Firemen’s And Cleaners’ Union of Western Australia (WALEDF & CU) was registered as a union in the Western Australian Arbitration Court on 21 February. It was in 1993 that three railway unions (the Australian Railway Union (ARU), the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen (AFULE) and the National Union of Railworkers WA Branch (NURWA) and one bus and tram union, the Australian Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association (ATMOE) all amalgamated to become the Rail Tram and Bus Industry Union (RTBU). The new organization was commonly known by its trading name the Public Transport Union (PTU) but the name was changed to the RTBU in 1998 due to the impact of privatisation. The WALEDF & CU remained an independent craft union for footplate men until 1999, when it became part of the RTBU..
