Notes Sir J. J. Talbot Hobbs recorded his activities during the World War I in diaries divided into 5 volumes. All volumes contained notes at the back of the diary, mostly in a reverse sequence, some accompanied by newspaper clippings and appendices.
Last two diaries are written on booklets marked, "Army Book 136".

Biography/history Architect. Sir J. J. Talbot Hobbs was on the W.A. Board of Architects, fellow of the W.A., Victorian and British Institutes, chairman organising a visit of the Prince of Wales in 1920 to W.A., W.A. Commissioner of the Empire Exhibition, delegate to the League of Nations Assembly, Chief Scout of W.A., State President of Toc H, patron of Legacy, Warden of W.A. War Memorial and director of several companies. During World War I, he was initially given the command of the artillery of the 1st Division of the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F). After the expansion of A.I.F., he was given the command of the 5th Division shortly before being promoted to Major General on 1st January 1917. He was credited with the recapture of Villers-Bretonneux. He commanded the Australian Corps briefly in October 1918 and succeeded John Monash in command on 28 November 1918 as acting lieutenant. In 1918, he invented, developed and manufactured steel casemates for machine guns. Appointed K.C.M.G. in January 1919, he was also awarded the Serbian Order of the White Eagle (1917), the French Croix de Guerre (twice). in February 1920, he was called to Melbourne as one of a committee of six generals advising the government on the organization, size and equipment of the army. In 1921 he was made commander of the 5th Division and the 13th Mixed Brigade, Australian Military Forces, appointments which he held until retirement from the army in 1927. From 1922 he was the military representative on the faculty of engineering, University of Western Australia, which had conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. on his return from the war.
