Summary "Miss Deane's index, filmed by the Mitchell Library Sydney (reference CY2452 % Micro Ref. Books 2.2CO/4) is arranged chronologically, but with several sections for each year. She has indexed alphabetically by name of letter writer only, with a prećis of the letter contents and noting names of persons mentioned therein. The drawback for researchers, therefore, was the fact that in a large number of cases they would be seeking a reference to the named persons, not the writer. Pastkeys has now compiled a composite index of all names and indicated the AJCP/PRO Reel on which the letters are located. Also included are any ships mentioned in the letters with a cross-reference to the letter writer."--Introduction.
"Miss Mathilde E. Deane, working at the Public Record Office in London in 1929-1930, compiled an index (sometimes referred to as The Settlers' Letters Index) to miscellaneous letters by or about settlers, military and individuals in the Colonial Office series of records including (in the early portion) both New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. ... This index contains 16,189 records." --Container.
